A hot beverage on a cold winter day is the perfect way to stay warm, but instead of the traditional coffee, tea or hot chocolate, consider trying something a bit different.
Mulled wine or cider
Mulled wine or mulled cider consists of spicing and sweetening some wine or cider and heating it up. Spices such as cinnamon and orange peel give these drinks a wintery feel, and the warmth will help combat cold temperatures.
Ingredients:
– One bottle of red wine (Cab Sauv, Merlot, etc.) or apple cider
– One peeled and sliced orange
– 8 to 10 cloves
– 3 cinnamon sticks
– 2 tsp of ground ginger or allspice
– ⅓ cup of honey or sugar
– ¼ cup of brandy (optional)
Preparation:
Combine all ingredients in a large pot or slow cooker. You can either put all spices in a tea infuser or cheesecloth ahead of time, or you can strain seasonings out at the end. Warm all ingredients on low-to-medium heat (avoid boiling) for 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally.
When ingredients have been well blended, the mulled wine is ready to serve. Ladle the mulled wine (without seasonings) into mugs and enjoy. Serves 4 to 6.
Hot toddy
This classic hot drink invites a bit of experimentation. This drink combines hot tea, some sweetness, and spirits.
Ingredients:
– 1 shot of brandy, whiskey or rum
– 1 tsp of honey
– ¼ lemon
– 1 cup of hot water
– 1 tea bag
Preparation:
Coat the bottom of a mug with honey. Add liquor and the juice from the lemon to the mug. On the side, heat water in a kettle and add a tea bag. Generally black and green teas mix best with the sweetness of the honey and lemon, though your choice of tea can be based on personal preference. When tea is fully steeped, pour into mug and stir. Serves 1.
