Networking is a tool that you don’t really recognize the importance of until you are entering the workforce, but the sooner you begin doing it, the better. Prepare yourself now, by using social media the right way—connect with companies and leaders that inspire you, and find people who share information that will benefit your life, both personally and professionally.
If you already know the field that you want to be in when you graduate, reach out to people and learn from them. Although it seems like a somewhat daunting task, it’s actually invigorating and helps you be better equipped to fulfill your future goals.
Use popular social media tools, such as LinkedIn, and Twitter, to connect with people who you think would make good contacts. Follow companies that you are interested in, see what they have to offer—find out what you could offer them. Connect with people and organizations that inspire you. Volunteer your time doing work that is both meaningful to you and will give you the experience you are looking for professionally.
While attending university, you are capable of making meaningful contacts and meeting so many new people. It is important to set time aside to do these things that will help propel you forward professionally, while also taking time to be social with your peers. You have four years here, maybe more; figure out who you are, what you want, and the person you want to be. Test out different paths and then choose one. Take these years to find your purpose.
Networking allows you to meet people in roles that you hope to fill five years from now. When you have the chance to meet with these role models, ask questions, take notes, don’t be nervous—they are there to help you, they want to guide you. They were likely in your position at some point, so remember that.
By putting yourself out there, and meeting people who are making it in the field you want to get into, you will be able to get an inside look at what’s in store for you. It helps to solidify the choices you will make during your university career.
Be smart, stay driven, and put yourself out there. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
