Hollywood Vampires is the rock n’ roll brainchild of an unlikely, yet somehow unsurprising trio: Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry. The star-studded, self-titled album, Hollywood Vampires, pays tribute to the “dead drunk” rockstars of the past, many of whom belonged to the 1970s drinking club of the same name. It is a tough feat to honour the likes of Keith Moon, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Harry Nillson, and Jimi Hendrix all in one album, but by pooling their talents and pure admiration for the material, the Hollywood Vampires eagerly prove that great songs never die. Though the production and arrangements may vary from cover to cover, the original energy of each song is renewed by the band and its many guest performers, including Sir Paul McCartney, Brian Johnson, Perry Ferrell, Joe Walsh, and Dave Grohl. To compliment the narrative concept of the project, there are also two brand new original tunes, “My Dead Drunk Friends” and “Raise the Dead”, that fit in nicely with the hard-hitting ‘70s rock sound. Not to mention, when an album begins with Sir Christopher Lee reciting a haunting passage from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, you know you’re in for a treat.
