2016 Festival Preview: Announcing new music festival lineups

Coachella recently announced their 2016 lineup, spurring the beginning of festival lineup announcements. From huge, two-weekend festivals hosting big names to low-key, local festivals, there is always something for everyone.

Glastonbury

Where: England

When: June 22-26

Undoubtedly one of the largest music festivals in the world, Glastonbury hosts an array of artists each summer. Located in England, the festival spans throughout one of the largest festival locations in the world, and offers specialized areas as well as over 100 stages. Last year’s lineup included Kanye West, Hozier, Deadmau5, and Florence and The Machine among many others.

Coachella

Where: Indio, California

When: April 15-27 & April 22-24

Coachella is always one of the most talked about festivals each year. This year, the announcement of the lineup received huge popularity with the reunions of LCD Soundsystem and Guns N’ Roses. The festival, located in California, is held over two weekends. Alongside a huge lineup, the grounds also have massive art displays and always attracts celebrities. Along with LCD Soundsystem and Guns N’ Roses, Calvin Harris is also headlining. Other performers include Ellie Goulding, The 1975, A$AP Rocky, and Sia.

Governors Ball

Where: New York City, USA

When: June 3-5

Governors Ball, held in New York City in June, is establishing itself as a big name festival. The festival has gone from a one-day event to a three-day blowout in a larger location. 2016’s lineup—which was just recently revealed—includes Kanye West, The Killers, The Strokes, and Beck. If you don’t want to break the bank for Coachella, Governors Ball is the east coast alternative.

Wayhome

Where: Oro-Medonte, Ont.

When: July 22-24

In the beginning of 2015, posters with mysterious symbols popped up all over Toronto. Those who cracked the code arrived at The Great Hall in Toronto to experience the unveiling of a new music and arts camping festival. The inaugural festival was held this past summer and it was a huge success. The festival sported huge acts such as Kendrick Lamar, Sam Smith, Modest Mouse, as well as local Toronto acts Alvvays and Brave Shores. The music and arts festival took place in Burl’s Creek Grounds amidst the “Save Oro” protest against the festival.

Field Trip

Where: Toronto, Ont.

When: June 4 & 5

Toronto music label Arts & Crafts hosts an annual festival that takes place at Fort York Garrison Common, where many other Toronto festivals, such as Toronto Urban Roots Festival, are also held. Last year, the festival brought the Arkells, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket, The War On Drugs, and many others. Field Trip fosters an environment different from other festivals; the crowd is incredibly respectful, spaced, and you will never have your sight blocked by a fan recording the show.

Hillside

Where: Guelph

When: July 22-24

Hillside is a festival located in Guelph. The curators also host Hillside Inside, a multi-venue preview of the summer festival. This year’s Hillside Inside brings Basia Bulat, The Strumbellas, and others to Guelph from January 29-31. The summer’s lineup is expected to be released a few months before the festival itself, held in July. Hillside alumni include Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers, and BADBADNOTGOOD.

With so many new festivals being established all over the world, it’s hard not to find a festival to enjoy. From camping to commuter festivals, big names to local indie bands, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is shelling out the cash for tickets.
