The promotion of wonderful comic book based films seems endless.
While writing this article on Mon. Jan. 11 2016, Buzzfeed reporter Adam B. Vary let the world know that the director of the new Black Panther film will be Creed director Ryan Coogler. Earlier in the day, speculation as to which characters will be in the film Avengers: Infinity War made the top trending news items list on Facebook.
The hunger for comic book film content is never-ending, and with 63 comic book movies coming by the end of 2020, as reported by Den of Geek people, we won’t be full anytime soon.
“Why a lot of people go to the comic book stuff is because people want to immerse themselves in the character,” said John West-Fiset, the founder of the Facebook group Deadpool Militia.
Eleven year old me went to see Spider-Man for a second time by myself. I walked out of the theatre humming “Hero” by Nickleback. Luckily, the music behind comic book-based films has progressed along with the admiration of the genre.
Samantha in the nutrition program at the University of Guelph supports West-Fiset idea, and feels that Tobey Maguire is the best “Spidy” on screen.
“My favourite superhero movie is Spider-Man,” said Samantha. “I think I like his backstory—he’s just a normal guy who got bit by a spider.”
Others find their own reasons for being invested in these modern mythological tales. Fans will soon have a plethora of viewing options, and not all comic-based films will be made equal. We asked folks on campus and at the Harvard Plaza what superhero or comic book film they are most excited about in 2016.
“[…] my top movie is Suicide Squad, then Batman v. Superman,” said Hamna, a student in the human kinetics program at the University of Guelph. “I just think it’s really interesting to see things from the villain’s point of view.”
“Civil War!” said Timothy Chiu, a member of U Of G’s Flash Club. “Chris Evans is hot, Winter Soldier was a phenomenal movie, and they are going to be building up on a lot of tensions of the Avengers […] I’m really excited for it.”
“Batman v Superman—I like Batman,” said Danielle Lemaire, a student in U of G’s bachelor of science program. “Christian Bale was [a] much better [Batman].”
“Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool,” said Vince Smith, a student who is pursuing a bachelor of psychology degree at the U of G. “[…] it seems like they are really going to commit to the mood of the comics going with an R-rating, really staying true to it.”
Other comic book films coming to theatres for the year 2016 include: X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, and Doctor Strange.
