WHAT IS TEDx?

TEDxGuelphU: From Theory to Reality

Gavin Armstrong is a University of Guelph PhD candidate, and currently one of the university’s most popular members. Armstrong is the founder and CEO of the Lucky Iron Fish Project—a non-profit organization dedicated to combating iron deficiency in the developing world.

His talk outlined a simple discrepancy between federal governments, members of the citizenry, and private corporations: each group believes themselves to be the most fit to solve the world’s problems.

“Governments, civil society, and the private sector live in closed off silos,” explained Armstrong. “We can all work together to solve the world’s numerous problems.”

Armstrong used his time to explain how his work on the Lucky Iron Fish Project acts as a reflection of his core belief. The organization is a certified B corporation—a non-profit ocompany that meets the B Lab’s rigourous standards of “social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.”

As Armstrong outlined the many individuals who questioned his abilities, his intentions, and his goals, he suggested a simple call-to-arms:

“Prove those silly bullies wrong,” said Armstrong. “Never let someone tell you that you can’t.”
