Year in Review: The Ontarion’s staff picks 2015-2016

The Elwins at the eBar

The Guelph music scene is the reason I fell in love with journalism. When I initially began volunteering at The Ontarion, I had the opportunity to do my first interview ever with Lowlands, a well-known Guelph band. It took the cake for the coolest experience I ever had, and from there, I became more actively involved in Guelph music. I interviewed bands, I started my own blog, and I became an active volunteer at The Ontarion. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for that interview with Lowlands. This is why I chose “Good vibes spread by The Elwins at eBar” as one of my favourite articles from this past year.

This article is the epitome of my love for Guelph’s music culture. I had a blast at eBar that night, and thanks to Guelph’s impressive ability to attract great bands, I had the incredible opportunity to meet one of my favourite bands, The Elwins. Prior to this night, I had interviewed Matt Sweeney, The Elwins’ lead singer, on the phone at The Ontarion’s office. On the night of the show, I followed up with the band after their set and got to share a few more casual words with Sweeney.

One of my favourite things about my job is getting the opportunity to meet new people everyday. Meeting my favourite bands is just as surreal as it was two years ago—I don’t know if I’ll ever get used to it, but it’s fun as hell and I wouldn’t trade what I’m doing with anything else in the world.
