Guelph does Kazoo! Fest

Sunday

Pancake Breakfast Show @ The Boarding House Gallery

Written by Dana Bellamy

Kazoo! Fest programming wrapped up on Sunday with a Pancake Breakfast show held at the Boarding House Gallery. After a few long and crazy evenings—and as one of the more family-friendly events—the atmosphere was laid back, yet still buzzing with people looking for one last hit of Kazoo!

Germaine Liu, a composer and University of Guelph alumna, began the show with nothing but a snare drum to accompany her in the open gallery space. By plucking, scratching, and screaming into the snares, Liu demonstrated how a single drum could be used in many different ways to convey the most unique sounds and emotions.

Multi-platform artist, Jesi the Younger, followed the experimental tone of the day with her performance piece, “Yoga Baby.” Both kids and adults alike stared in amazement as her topsy-turvy character moved and twisted into impossible prenatal yoga positions.

As the festival drew to a close, the remaining Kazoo!-goers piled into the next room to hear the humbling sounds of local singer-songwriter, Matt Monoogian. Joined by Nick Zubeck on electric guitar, and Joseph Gallo Jr. on bass and backing vocals, Monoogian took to lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and percussion—sometimes all at once.

The gallery space may have been a little drafty—okay, it was freezing—but the trio managed to project a different kind of warmth onto the crowd with their folky, foot-tapping rhythms and soft, sentimental melodies.
