Album of the Week

“Black Mask II” is the first song on Lowlands’ album Huron, which features a lap steel guitar solo that draws attentive ears out of the half-hearted. The next song, “Dog’s Bite,” provides warm harmonies during the chorus, and strong raspy vocals from Gordon Auld that wail and flutter the lyrics with incredible dynamic range. The rhythm starts off slowly, picking up in speed, pulling you right into the next song. “Wonderful Hearts” slowly builds from a lone guitar and weeps to a harmony of vocals. The song continues to grow, changing in tempo and mood around the halfway mark until it meets its inevitable end. The entirety of Huron is art; the dynamics, the rhythms, the lyrics, the vocals, the melodies, and the harmonies. Every song is a new story—different in mood, yet similar in sound—and is deeply satisfying for the listener.
