Homemade Halloween treats that don’t go overboard on sugar

A few ideas to keep you feeling great

The time of year has come where we crack out the decorations, buy the face paint, and typically reach for the candy. But Halloween doesn’t mean we must drop into a sugar coma every night. There are lots of alternatives that are just as festive to keep you in the spirit while maintaining a (somewhat) healthy lifestyle.

Spooky Mar-TEA-ni

Try this simple spooky mar-tea-ni! All you need is a festive spiced tea, ice, sugar, and black food colouring. First, brew the tea with the ratio of tea to water altered to make the tea stronger than you normally would. Next, put tea in the fridge or add ice to cool the liquid down. While the tea is cooling, add black food colouring to some sugar, then dampen the rim of your glasses and dip them in the sugar. Finally, add the tea to the glass—avoiding the sides—and enjoy!

Candy Corn Parfait

If you are looking to get festive for breakfast, look no further than this candy corn parfait. All you need are a few slices of pineapple and a few slices of an orange or clementine, and plain or vanilla yoghurt. First, place the pineapple in the bottom of your glass—an old fashion milkshake glass or ice cream glass works best. Then, place the orange or clementine slices on top of that layer. Next, add a dollop of yoghurt to the top and you have an easy Halloween treat that won’t rot your teeth.

Green Ghoul Bites

These green ghoul bites also make a great snack. For this recipe, you will need avocados, salt, your choice of toast, and tomatoes (if you’d like). Toast your bread to make it a little crispy, then proceed to rip off the crust and cut the toast to make a ghoul or ghost-like shape. If you happen to have a cookie cutter with a desired shape that could work as well. Next, cut the avocado in half and mash up the inside to make it easy to spread. Spread the avocado onto the toast, add a dash of salt and garnish with small slices of tomatoes to make eyes or a mouth.

Mummy Dogs

Finally, these mummy dogs are perfect for parties. For this festive appetizer, you will need hot dogs or veggie dogs and original recipe Pillsbury Croissants in the tube. Boil your hot dogs so that they are cooked almost all the way through. Once they are done, pull them out of the water and wrap strips of the Pillsbury dough around them, like mummy wrapping. Try to leave a space where you could add two drops of mustard for eyes. Place the wrapped hot dogs in the oven and bake to golden brown. Remove from oven, garnish, and serve warm.
