U of G mourns loss of student in residence

A first-year student was found dead in South Residence on the morning of Tues, Nov. 1.

According to a news release from the University of Guelph, the student lived in Prairie Hall. At the time of publication, the University had not released the student’s name pending notification of family members.

An investigation by the Guelph Police Service is underway to determine the cause of death. Officials have reported that public safety is not a concern in connection to the incident at this time.

“We are deeply saddened by this news, and my heart goes out to the family and friends of this student,” said University president Franco Vaccarino in the release.

The University is encouraging students and members of the community to utilize the many counselling services available on campus.

“As a community, there is no greater struggle than losing one of our own, and we will ensure that students affected by this tragedy receive support and assistance,” added Vaccarino.

“We mourn and struggle with every student death,” Brenda Whiteside, vice-president of student affairs, told CTV News in an interview on Tuesday.
