Dresscode double standards

In response to a student being assaulted for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, Brenda Whiteside, associate vice-president of student affairs at the University of Guelph, commented to CBC News, “You need to be aware that people are going to react.”

I personally have no problem with Whiteside’s warning that certain behaviours may illicit mindless responses by a segment of the population who find it difficult to operate within civil society. However, my objection is stirred by an apparent double standard. I have been taught—at this very university no less—that such comments are considered callous in that they blame the victim. So, either such precautions should be offered to any and everyone who appears to be putting themselves in less than ideal situations or the University heeds to its own council and not point fingers at victims, in all circumstances, even if they support Trump.
