Made popular by social media, the accessory is expected to be the defining item for the new year
Vogue has declared the newest trend in fashion for 2017: the vape pen. The small, portable vaporizer can be used both as an accessory and to smoke flavoured vapours. This revelation has come in the wake of celebrities with large social media followings such as Kylie Jenner sporting their own pens on Instagram.
The U.K. edition of the magazine recently declared that cleavage is “out” and praised vaping as the new fashion trend to follow.
“Vaping suits every body, it truly is the universal fashion accessory,” said an editor representing the magazine in a press release.
Styling your own vape pen need not be expensive or difficult. Wearing it on a lanyard is an easy way to turn the item into a statement necklace. Customizing the look using decals is a great way to have a pen look for every outfit. If you want to protect your pen, pre-orders are already available for the new Kate Spade cases that will be released early next year.
The trend hasn’t been met with open arms from everyone, however. Doctors have started to issue warnings that vaping is not the healthiest activity, linking some of its effects to that of smoking cigarettes.
“Similar to the waist trainer trend, we’re seeing social media stars influence impressionable minds into making harmful choices for their body,” said Dr. Herman Schwartz of the American Lung Association.
Warnings from health officials haven’t stopped sales in vape pens and accessories. When one site launched a new set of flavoured vapours, it received more than one million hits in 24 hours and the website crashed numerous times. The product is already helping to boost the careers of many. Simply search “vape DIY” on YouTube and you’ll find hundreds of tutorials, with some amassing more than one million hits.
“I used to think vaping was a strange hobby and that it looked kind of dumb,” said Ashley Smith who goes by Vape Princess on YouTube. “Once I saw my favourite celebs showing them off though, I knew I had to get in on [this trend.]”
Vape pens can be adapted to fit any style, but arguably look best when paired with a trench coat and fedora.
