The women’s basketball team picked up their second win of the season with a victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds. However, the Gryphons could not gain momentum from the win as they fell to the Brock Badgers the following day. Guelph now sits at three wins and 11 losses in the season.
Men’s basketball vs. Algoma and Brock
Gryphons 76, Thunderbirds 58
Gryphons 62, Badgers 89
The men’s basketball team picked up their first win in the new Gryphons Athletic Centre in convincing fashion, beating Algoma 76-58. The next day the Gryphons faced off against the nationally ranked Brock Badgers, losing 89-62. Guelph sits in third place in the OUA Central standings with five games left in the season.
Women’s hockey vs. Laurier
Gryphons 4, Golden Hawks 1
Third-year winger Kaitlin Lowy scored a hat-trick as the Gryphons extended their winning streak. Having won eight in a row, Guelph is ranked first in the OUA and will no doubt be the favourite heading into playoffs in a few weeks.
Men’s hockey vs. McGill and Ottawa
Gryphons 2, Redmen 4
Gryphons 4, GeeGees 3
The men’s hockey team lost to McGill, who are ranked third in the country, before getting some redemption against Ottawa the next day. The Gryphons defeated the GeeGees 4-3, stopping what was the longest active winning streak in the country. Ottawa had not lost a game in 2017, and Guelph’s win proves that they can skate with the best of them.
Women’s volleyball vs. Nipissing
Gryphons 2, Lakers 3
The women’s volleyball team fell in a hard fought game against the Nipissing Lakers, losing their first game out of the last six. The Lakers came back after going down two sets to one, to win the final two sets of the match and take home the victory.
Men’s volleyball vs. Nipissing
Gryphons 3, Lakers 0
The men’s volleyball team beat the Lakers in three sets to zero in their first win at the new Gryphons Athletic Centre on Sun, Jan. 29. The win puts Guelph into second place in the OUA West standings. With six games left in the regular season the Gryphons look ready for a competitive playoff run.
