Midterm munchables for your next study session

Healthy snacks to give you natural energy

With midterm season in full swing, you might be gearing up for some long nights in the library reviewing—or learning—all of the material that was covered in the first half of the semester. While it’s tempting to bring a bag of Funyuns for snacking to a study carrel, it’s important to fuel your body with the right foods so that you finish reading through your umpteenth PowerPoint presentation. Study up on these snacks before packing your bags and heading to the library for your upcoming review session.

Fresh Fruit

Grabbing an apple, orange, or banana can be one of the simplest options for students looking to bring a quick and easy snack with them when they’re heading to campus to do some last minute work on that group seminar presentation. While not all fresh fruit is easily portable—I’m looking at you, berries—a vitamin C filled sugar boost may be just what you need to put the finishing touches on that bothersome essay. Remember, flunking a class isn’t fun, but neither is scurvy.

Dried Fruit

Everyone approaches midterm season differently. For some people, a few hours in the library or sitting at home with a nice cup of tea is all they need to feel ready for their next test. For other people, it takes a marathon study session to feel confident enough to go into their upcoming midterm feeling prepared and fresh food may not have the staying power that you need for those long nights in the library. Dried fruits, whether it’s a handful of banana chips, apricots, or apple rings, may be the solution to your studying lifestyle. It’s important to remember, however, that dried fruits don’t always have the same nutritional benefits as their fresh counterparts, but they do have the longevity of the geriatric folks that they often resemble.

Trail Mix

Studying for midterms is, in a lot of ways, like hiking through a forest. It’s an activity that can be done in solitude or with friends and you may have some deep introspective moments over the course of the excursion. On this journey, it’s important to have the right fuel to keep you going, lest you should collapse during the ordeal. Trail mix is a great snack for either task, with a blend of nuts, seeds and fruits to keep you chugging along until you reach your scholastic goal.Whether it’s just a handful to tide you over until your next meal, or you want to buckle on a feed bag full of your favourite mix to keep you fuelled all night, trail mix is sure to keep you going until you finally finish those overly detailed lecture slides. If you want to keep your mix healthy, try to avoid the styles that include candies and sugar-coated fruits or, better yet, make your own trail mix at home so you know exactly what will be in your next handful.
