College Royal 2018

North America’s biggest student run open house

College Royal is a great way for U of G students to volunteer their time while gaining invaluable skills in animal handling. This past weekend, the College Royal Society, in conjunction with a number of U of G organizations and clubs, hosted the 94th Annual College Royal Open House, the largest student-run open house of its kind in North America.

College Royal, which takes place over 12 days, is host to a variety of events including the Kick Off Pub, square dancing, livestock shows, and of course, the Open House. This year’s Open House saw classics like the Line Dancing Competition, Old MacDonald’s Farm, and the popular lecture series.

The Open House weekend is an opportunity for guests from all over to get a taste for what life is like at the University of Guelph. Hannah Sweett, president of the College Royal Society told The Ontarion: “I feel like a lot of the community just passes by the university and they don’t really know what goes on here, so I think it’s a great open house for the public to see… Like, every door is open on campus.” The Open House also provides opportunities for U of G clubs, faculty, and students to interact with the community in a hands-on environment.College Royal is not only “a great event for all ages… [but] we’re a not-for-profit company, so it’s a free event,” said Sweett.

Sweett also mentioned that there are lots of ways to get involved whether it be helping with livestock shows or with any of the clubs that host booths and activities. Needless to say, this past weekend was full of fun and gave people from all walks of life a glimpse into what our campus has to offer.
