Five ways to keep cool in the summer

Or how to not go insane from the heat

It’s almost summer and the temperatures are rising. Soon they will be hellishly high. And for those of us without an A/C unit (as is the case for almost all student living accommodations, let’s be honest), we could all start feeling like Dante walking through hell when we make our way to the kitchen.

What can you do (save for dropping a whole paycheck on an air conditioner at C-Tire) to keep your peace of mind during the heat waves? Well, The Ontarion’s got you covered.

1. Sleep naked

This should be self-explanatory, but if for some reason you’re not doing it when the sweat is flowing and your back is glued to the sheets, then you need to just do it.

2. Invest in a cooling pillow and a good pair of sheets

If your sleep is suffering, you need to invest in a proper pillow and sheets. You can purchase cooling pillows for the cheap on Amazon, or go out and buy a bamboo pillow, but be sure to get one that ensures cooling. For sheets, look for light material like bamboo or linen.

3. Direct your fan towards the natural air current (not against it)

After you buy your fan or bring it up from your basement, aim it in a direction that flows with the natural air currents. You can also set the fan so that it is blowing the air out through the window creating a DIY vent of sorts.

4. Know when to open and close your windows

When you leave for work in the morning, close all your windows and shut your blinds so that all the coolness of the night gets trapped in your abode. After you come home, open the windows when the heat is more intense inside than outside.

5. Mitigate the heat from electronics

Electronics radiate heat, so use the bare minimum. Maybe read a book instead of watching TV and playing video games. You also gain the small bonus of paying a cheaper hydro bill!
