Event featured activities for all ages and music performances
The University of Guelph welcomed Gryphons and Guelphites of all ages to Johnston Green on June 24 to enjoy a free event: SummerFest on the Green. While the event did not seem to be as well-attended as last year’s due to the rainy weather, those in attendance were in good spirits. In response to the rain, organizers moved activities inside of Creelman Hall and the Gryph-Zone was relocated to the basement of War Memorial. Creelman played host to several activities.

Jenny Lin from Wild Ontario showed us her favourite bird, Whistler the broad-winged hawk. Whistler will be 20 years old this year and is the first hawk Lin worked with when she started with Wild Ontario three years ago.

Peter Chen, Jeroen Boeve, and core lab manager Shane Walker (not pictured) from the department of food science were giving out free ice cream made with citrus saison beer. Chen told The Ontarion that the university is already known for making ice cream and that the food science department is in the process of developing a beer lab. Walker explained that even the spent grain — “a by-product from brewing that often gets discarded, or, if it is used for anything it is animal feed” — was processed on campus and used to make the cones.

The College of Business and Economics, with support from CBaSE — the Centre for Business and Student Enterprise — let people dress up and get pictures of a cross-Canada summer road trip using a green screen and some fun props. Mairin Scannell, Jacob Elliot, Alex Boughen, and Scott Carter (pictured left to right) strike a pose for The Ontarion.

The Gryphons football team gave out tattoos to promote team spirit and gave out free tickets to their game against Waterloo, which will be played in Alumni Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 20. Photographed here (from left to right) are: Akeem Knowles (defensive back), Jordan Terrio (wide receiver), Dotun Aketepe (defensive back), Zeph Fraser (wide receiver), Patrick Pierre (running back), and Elijah Walker (defensive back).

SummerFest also featured music performances by children’s entertainers Splash ‘N Boots, First Nations dance troupe White Pine Dancers, rock and alternative band Brave & Crazy, and indie-rock band Hollerado.

Hollerado drew the largest crowd to Johnston Green and had people clapping, dancing, and singing along. The band’s banter and jokes, which they tried their best to censor and make appropriate for the kids in the crowd, was welcomed by the audience as kids, parents, and U of G students stood side-by-side to watch the show.
