Lil Wayne solidifies his G.O.A.T. status

Tha Carter V released

After years of label issues, legal battles, and anticipation, Tha Carter V has finally been released after a six-year wait. The album is an ode to Lil Wayne’s discography. He reflects on his success, his downfalls, his family, and his life. The album features an array of artists, including Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, the late XXXTentacion and even Lil Wayne’s daughter, Reginae Carter. The album starts off with a message from Lil Wayne’s mother, Jacida Carter. She congratulates him on his success and thanks him for the person he has become, despite the issues he faced. It’s a heartwarming way to introduce listeners to the album, but it sets the tone.

Lil Wayne retains his trap routes in songs such as “Open Safe” and “Mona Lisa,” but Wayne also introduces a somber tone to Tha Carter V. On the track “Open Letter,” Wayne discusses his place in this world and his fears while on the track “Let It All Work Out,” he shares his experience with suicide at a young age. Tracks such as “Mona Lisa” and “Dedicate” prove that Lil Wayne can still make a solid hip-hop track.
