The different types of cannabis and what to expect

What you need to know:
sativa vs. indica

As more people begin to explore the many available cannabis options, a big factor in the decision making is whether to pick a sativa strain or an indica strain.

Two major compounds found in cannabis are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The compound responsible for the “high” feeling is the THC, which is the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis. CBD on the other hand helps with pain relief and is responsible for the relaxing effect of cannabis. Generally, sativas are higher in THC than indicas, which are relatively higher in CBD.

Sativa plants tend to grow taller, with longer and narrower leaves, and are less dense compared to an indica plant. They’re lighter in colour and are better suited to daytime use as they give the user a “head high.” The effects of a sativa strain include higher alertness, increased energy, and feeling more creative. It has anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects and make the user generally more uplifted and euphoric. This is due to the increased release of serotonin, as they have a higher count of the psychoactive THC.

Indica plants tend to be short, bushy plants with wider leaves and are much more compact and dense when compared to a sativa strain. It gives the user a “body high” so they are more suited to nighttime use. Indica strains induce a feeling of deep relaxation, as they soothe the mind and muscles. This also helps with acute pain and increases appetite or as some people call it, the “munchies.” Many of the aforementioned effects are because of the increased levels of dopamine from the higher CBD count.

While the strains can be found separately, they can also be found in hybrid form.

Editor’s note: Even though cannabis is legalized now, it’s important to educate yourself before making any decisions. When in doubt, treat cannabis use as you would alcohol — always use responsibly and familiarize yourself with what is and isn’t legal where you reside.
