Ryan Sheahan hired as new head coach of Gryphons football

Former Calgary Dinos coach flies to Guelph, hoping to soar with the team

The University of Guelph’s Department of Athletics has chosen Ryan Sheahan as the football team’s 17th head coach. His first formal appearance was made on Friday, Jan. 18 in the Gryphon Football Pavilion for a press conference.

During his short time in Guelph, Sheahan has already spoken to his new team and is looking forward to coaching the Yates Cup semi-finalists. The 38-year-old Queen’s University graduate has an impressive history as the assistant coach and offensive coordinator of the Dinos, the University of Calgary football team. During his four-year term with the Dinos, he earned a U Sports record from both regular and playoff season with 36 wins and seven losses.

Sheahan’s success as a head coach is not foreign to his family. His father, Pat Sheahan, who recently stepped down as the Queen’s University Gaels football head coach in 2018, has an impressive record of 156 regular season and playoff wins, which is fifth all-time in the history of U Sports football.

Not only is Sheahan driven to push his team to success, he is a strong believer of supporting his players’ academic abilities and mental health.

With the current Guelph roster teeming with exceptional talent, Sheahan wants to build a new league standard with a team that will fight for success. He noted that his coaching is “always about the people.”
