The Frosty Mug has returned home after the Hawks took the win in 2019.
“The Frosty Mug” refers to the Gryphons annual men’s varsity hockey game which is played at the Sleeman Centre in mid-January.
The Guelph Gryphons Men’s Hockey team took on the Laurier Hawks last Thursday, at the 11th annual Frosty Mug. The sold-out game had 4,942 people in attendance, and the crowd went wild halfway into the first period when Gryphons player Todd Winder scored the first goal.
The Hawks took the lead in the second period, with two goals scored in just two minutes, by Grayden Gottschalk and Anthony Conti.
The Gryphons would not let this stand and tied things up with a goal of their own, scored by Mikkel Aagaard, right before the end of the second period. The Gryphons then took the lead with two goals in the third period, by Luke Kutkevicius and Giordano Finoro.
With a 4-2 lead there were lots of cheers as the Gryphons successfully defended their net. But the Gryphons could not hold off the Hawks forever. Laurier player Anthony Conti scored with 6 minutes left in the game. While the Gryphons did not take advantage of the Hawks goalie being out of the net in the last couple minutes of the game, they took home the win 4-3.
