Explosion inside U of G’s Gryphon Center Arena

UPDATE: The Gryphon Center Arena will be closed until Oct. 13, 2020 to repair damage caused by the explosion.

An explosion occurred this morning inside the Gryphon Center Arena, and people are being encouraged to avoid the building for the time being.

U of G Alert, the University of Guelph’s emergency notification system, first tweeted the incident at 7:05 a.m., stating that no injuries had been reported.

A spokesperson for the University told CTV News Kitchener that the explosion was supposedly caused by a Zamboni, but the director of campus police, fire safety and emergency services, David Lee told the news agency that the cause of the blast remains unknown.

The damage was also reported as minor contained to the room housing the Zamboni, and to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

CTV stated further that the University campus is still open and classes are still running, but people are being asked to avoid the Arena as police and fire officials are on site investigating the scene. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called to attend the scene as well.
