Guelph Men’s Soccer Wins Third in a Row

They say home is where the heart is, and that has certainly been the case for the Guelph men’s soccer team this year, as they won their third straight game at home, defeating the Brock Badgers handily by a score of 4-0 on a warm Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

From the word “go,” the Gryphons dictated the play of the game and kept the Badger defenders on their heels, reeling off numerous chances to score, when finally Joseph Agyemang finished off a nice pass from Timothy Flynn in the 20th minute for the opening goal of the game, and the lead for the home team. The Gryphons didn’t look back from there, as players and fans barely had time to catch their breath before Flynn got in on the action with a goal in the 21st minute for his fourth of the season, and a two goal cushion for Guelph.

The Gryphons continued to control the play throughout the first half, with Agyemang converting a header for his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute to cap off an impressive first half for the home team, something that the home fans have been used to of late. The Gryphons have won three straight games at home, beating the opposing team by at least four goals in each game while recording shut outs in two of the three.

The second half was much the same for the Gryphons, limiting Brock’s scoring chances with solid defensive play, and stellar goaltending by Niklas Wetterling, who earned his fifth shut-out of the season, and second in as many games. A goal by Jeremy Gaylor off a penalty kick in the 83rd minute made it 4-0 and sealed the victory for Guelph, who improved their record to 7-1-2 for the season.

The team’s next game is at home versus Windsor, and if the last three games are any indication it should be a very entertaining game for both the Gryphon fans and players.
