We’ve all been there—something went wrong while picking your schedule, and now you’re stuck spending your money on this class that you can’t stand. Maybe you don’t like the professor, or maybe you just don’t like the content—regardless, you’re now dreading the semester. So, what can you do to change it?
I like to think that we have control over our lives. I know, sometimes it really doesn’t seem like we’re in control at all, but those are the times that you really need to take control. First step to enjoying a class you don’t enjoy: decide that it’s really not that bad.
Tell yourself, “Hey, so I’m stuck in this class because course selection is a pain, but I’m going to make the best out of this.”
After you’re done talking to the mirror, here are a few things you can do to make the most out of a class you really don’t enjoy.
Get to know the professor
This is always my top piece of advice for students in any situation. Go to your professor’s office hours, talk to them about the class and what you could get out of it, or just talk about your life in general. Regardless, if you begin to actually like your professor, I can guarantee that the class will seem a little more interesting.
Meet classmates
One of the best ways to stay motivated to go to class is to find friends in that class that can keep you motivated. Even if you don’t really like the class that much, at least you’ll have sitting with your friends to look forward to.
Form study groups
After you’ve met a few classmates, suggest forming a study group. Most university students are open to this, because it really does help when studying for finals. Making a study group to discuss the course content outside of class is an opportunity to become engaged, even when you don’t enjoy the actual lectures as much.
Fill out course evaluation forms at the end of the semester
As a student, we have the opportunity to voice our opinions about courses every semester. Evaluation forms are distributed either in class, or via GryphMail, depending on the professor. If the course was really that bad, use the opportunity to explain what was wrong with it, and to make suggestions as to how to improve the course in the future.
Bring a treat for yourself to class
If all else fails and you really cannot find a way to enjoy the class, bringing a Starbucks drink to help pass the time won’t hurt.
