Getting involved on campus

Here at the University of Guelph, there is quite literally something for everyone, both in and out of the classroom. You have so many opportunities to discover new things that interest you and new people who like the same things that you already like. One of the hardest parts about adjusting to life on campus, however, is figuring out where all these people are, how you can discover these things, and “putting yourself out there.” Here are a few tips to make getting involved a bit easier.

Hit up CSA Clubs Days
At the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters each year, the Central Student Association (CSA) hosts Clubs Days, which usually fall on the second Thursday and Friday of the new semester. The event is hosted in the University Centre courtyard, and most CSA-accredited clubs show up with posters, flyers, and cool people who are really excited to tell you about their club. This is the best possible way to check out a huge amount of campus offerings at once, so even if you aren’t entirely sure what you’d like to get involved with, head to the UC and narrow down your options.

Contact organizations directly
All of the clubs and organizations that exist at the U of G can be found in a handy list on the university’s website. Most of the groups listed will have a webpage of their own, and it’s pretty easy to track down an email address these days. If you already know what you want to get involved with, this is a great way to cut out the middle-man and get right into what you want to be doing. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek direction.

Get involved with the college student unions
Each college at the university has their own Student Union that makes decisions that affect the student body they govern. Understanding what’s happening with your Student Union—as well as voting on issues and changes within your college—is an important step to making the most of your education. If politics are of interest to you, and you’d like to get involved beyond attending the odd meeting or voting online, consider running for one of the seats or executive positions within your college’s Student Union. You can also get involved with the Student Senate Caucus, which basically functions as an overarching union for all colleges, representing the students of U of G on all issues related to educational policy and policy-making.

Broaden your horizons
When it comes to getting involved, you don’t have to limit yourself to the things that happen right on campus. Guelph is a diverse city with a lot of opportunities for students to volunteer and work with organizations at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels. Check out the Volunteer Centre of Guelph-Wellington downtown for up-to-date postings and openings within the city.
Above all else, make the most of your time at this school and in this city. University is unique in its ability to connect you with different people, clubs, and organizations all within one small environment. So, figure out what things are important and interesting to you, and go after them.
