The Internet this Week

With the holidays fast approaching, the night is dark and full of carols. In advance of the gifting season, HBO has decided to give the world a gift, or at least a tease.

In a move that is sure to ramp up speculation, hope, and frustration among viewers HBO has released their newest Game of Thrones advertisement. Prominently featured in the new poster style advert is an upright, slightly bloodied Jon Snow.

This poster was tweeted from the official HBO account with a simple message that read “APRIL. #GoTSeason6 #GameOfThrones.”

This little tidbit of information dropped from HBO quickly soared up the charts and was the third most trending item on Twitter, as well as in Facebook’s top 10 trending items; if only for a few hours.

“Dead is dead,” said Game of Thrones co-show runner David Weiss to EW in June, 2015.

But is that straightforward?

Fans of the series have been pushed, pulled, and prodded by the media to think that Jon Snow is alive, or in some cases, dead. The plethora of photos that have been taken of actor Kit Harrington who plays Jon Snow seem to point to the fact the he will return to the show in some capacity. Well, what if he’s coming back for a dream or flashback scene? That might be true, but fans won’t know for certain until season six begins next April.

If, and only if, Jon Snow has ceased to be, has expired, has gone to the place of the old gods (or the new), or has finally embraced winter, then Facebook has launched a tool to help you get over the ice cold break up.

To be truthful, I’m not sure what Facebook can do with your made up relationship with a fictional character, but as of Nov. 19 2015, the social media empire has released some tools in the testing stage to help you get over your former partner.

This tool will allow you to effectively control what your past partner can see of you on Facebook, what you will see of them, and what people can see of you and your former partner. Upon a change of relationship status in your profile settings, Facebook will ask its users if they would like to take a break. It will then begin to take you through the steps that help you manage your privacy as it relates to your broken heart, or moment of empowerment.

If you didn’t click the button to have a formal Facebook relationship, you still have options to ease the pain of the split. You can always control your privacy settings on Facebook. This new tool being introduced is to help streamline the process and give Facebook users a better overall experience.

With the large amount of personal information folks are choosing to share online, it has never been more important to manage who sees what and when. Helping keep ex’s and oh’s off your page is another step towards being a conscious social media user. As Elle King might say, don’t let your ex’s and oh’s haunt you, leave that to the ghosts of Christmas.
