Highlighting the best places to take advantage of your student status
Being a student can be hard. You have to worry about spending your money on tuition, books, rent, groceries, and entertainment. Making ends meet so that you can make all of your payments can be difficult, but one of the hidden ways to make the most out of your money is to look for stores that offer student discounts.
When you attend the University of Guelph you automatically receive a free membership card to the Bookshelf. The membership card gets you discounts on books, food and drinks. If you haven’t picked up your card yet bring your student ID to the front counter at The Bookshelf. The card itself costs $15 if you’re not a University student, if you are, then its $15 saved for something else you need to buy.
It’s always cheaper to buy in bulk, but if you don’t need a Costco-sized quantity of something or you don’t want to spend money on the yearly fee for the membership card, the Bulk Barn is a good option. It’s within walking distance of the university campus and they offer a 10 per cent discount to students on Wednesdays.
To wake up early to make breakfast before a 9 a.m. class doesn’t happen too often, but buying breakfast on your way to school adds up over time. If you join The Great Canadian Bagel’s birthday club they will send you a half a dozen bagels during your birthday month. They will mail your birthday bagels to you so you save gas money as well as breakfast money.
Stocking up on groceries is always a must, especially if you don’t want to live on Chinese takeout food, but no one has the time to price match every item in their grocery cart. The Metro is close to campus and they offer a student discount of 10 per cent on Tuesdays. They are open 24 hours to make shopping more convenient. You can also collect Air Miles.
Trying to have a social life when you’re broke is difficult. Woodlawn Bowl has cheap bowling nights to add a little excitement in your life. Sunday to Thursday from 8 p.m. to close they have $1.00 games. On Fridays, they have cosmic All You Can Bowl nights. It’s $15 per person and $3.99 shoe rental. They also feature monthly theme nights and all ages bowling leagues.
Making your dollar stretch until the end of the month can be hard, but planning your month out ahead of time and taking advantage of these student discount days could save you a bundle.
