Things to consider doing this break
At this point in the winter semester you may be feeling a little lack-luster. Hope is, however, on the way. I’m not talking about the incessant amount of Tim Horton’s coffee you will inevitably consume this month due to the gambling tendencies that Roll Up the Rim inspires in all of us. No, I’m talking about the luxurious amount of free time to be had during reading week.
Most of us will be curled up on the couch in a comatose state, binge-watching How I Met Your Mother, and not caring about the rest of the world. Yet some of us may be more daring and actually read our under-used over-priced textbooks, or some may be super ambitious and start those dreaded essays early. But let’s be honest, when Netflix and your bed are calling your name there is nothing that can stand in the way of sliding into those sweet comfy sheets. Consider this a time to recoup your mental health and relax your brain muscles. However, if restless leg syndrome is preventing you from chillaxing in your PJs all day and night, don’t worry, there are plenty of other things to fill the seven-day break with.

Spend an entire day in a game tournament. Invite some friends over and grab the controller or game board. Time to put those strategic skills you’ve learned in League of Legends to the test, and claim bragging rights all semester long. Split friends into teams or all collaborate into one giant showdown. Winner calls dibs on next game. Call of Duty anyone?
For those more adventurous, road trip it-anywhere your heart desires. There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road with friends, blasting the music and eating as much junk food as you can scarf down while mouthing the words to the entire Baby One More Time album. Or take a solo trip; more junk food for you! Drive out to the country and watch the sunset and stargaze at night. Take a ride to a nearby city, and go on a mission to find the best diner in town and just order dessert. Find a local café, order an Italian soda, find a cozy nook to sit in and read a book for the rest of the day.
Although, if you’re anything like me, you may just want to experience the great nuances of a “stay-cation.” This mostly includes me cuddled up on the couch with my dog, diet Coke in one hand, remote in the other. Occasionally, you will find me asleep on said couch with dog firmly taking up half of the sleeping room, and me squeezed into a fetal position, but I digress.
Other things to consider doing this break: clean out your closet, eat copious amounts of ice cream, try to make macaroons, window-shop, order everything off the dollar menu at McDonalds, finally learn how to parallel park, write a haiku or buy a pet goldfish.
However you plan to spend reading week, know that those of you who will be sitting at home watching Netflix in bed and ordering in take-out all break long are not alone.
