Dear Editor,
In the review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the March 31, 2016 issue of The Ontarion, I was informed that the author knew more about comic books than me. The author then proceeded to only partially support that claim.
One thing I would like to set straight is this: Although the standard modern Batman comic shies away from the Caped Crusader killing crooks, Batman has a long and illustrious history of using firearms to stop crime. In the 1940-50’s, one of Batman’s key tools was a gun. However, even if the counterpoint to this is that The Dark Knight as we know him has long abandoned the guns of his campy past, one can draw upon more modern examples. In Final Crisis, Batman shoots Darkseid with the God Bullet fully expecting to kill him. In Batman: Odyssey, our cowled hero blasts the guts out of the man that led him to the centre of the Earth.
Secondly, while The Death of Superman may have dismantled Superman as a cultural icon, that was not the intention of the comic, and it could have been done right.
My main point is that, for someone who knows “more about comics” than I do, there was a significant amount of precedent that was ignored.
Sincerely,
Jack Fisher
