Guelph police seize drugs and money from student

Drug bust in East Village

On Friday April 2, 2016, Guelph police seized several items from a University of Guelph residence building, subsequently charging a 19-year-old man with drug-related crimes.

The Oakville man—a student at the university—was found in possession of various street drugs, including cocaine, MDMA, and marijuana. During the search, Guelph police also seized more than $13,000 in cash and a BB gun.

The search was conducted by the Guelph Police Service Drug Unit, following an investigation that began in February. The total street-value of the drugs seized is approximately $2,000.

The Oakville man has since been charged with five counts of trafficking a controlled substance, three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of proceeds of crime.

The residence that was searched is one of the town-homes located in the university’s East Village complex.

In a statement emailed to CBC News, Brenda Whiteside, the University of Guelph associate vice-president of Student Affairs said, “We take this allegation seriously and will support Guelph police with its investigation.”

Whiteside added, “Our residences are safe and supportive living and learning environments. Once we have further information, we will proceed to take action through our own internal procedures.”

In recent years, the Guelph police has attempted to crack down on hard-drug dealers in the region. Since 2012, there has been a significant increase in methamphetamine use in the Guelph-Waterloo region, and although use is declining, there is still a strong trend of crack-cocaine use.
