Watch for closures and reduced service
On May 2, 2016, the City of Guelph closed the section of Gordon Street between the intersections with College Avenue and Wellington Street to everyone but local traffic.
The construction project is part of a massive undertaking to revamp the city’s watermains and to reduce waste water.
The Guelph Animal Hospital and the plazas at the corner of Gordon and Wellington will be accessible from the north, while Royal City Park, The Boathouse, The Guelph Lawn Bowling Club, and the covered bridge will be accessible from the south.
The City of Guelph has provided detour routes to help commuters circumvent the construction and have asked that commuters take the official detours to preserve the safety and calmness of the residential Water Street.

In addition to commuter detours, Guelph Transit routes 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 5, 8, and 16 will also be following detour routes. None of the busses will be stopping along the designated construction areas. Transit detour information can be found on Guelph Transit’s social media accounts and on the Guelph Transit website.
According to a City of Guelph release, Gordon construction will be completed by May 26 so that the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario can be run safely.
Alongside the Gordon Street closure, there are a few other roadwork projects happening in the city.
From April 11 to mid-August, Willow Road will be reduced to one lane as the road is reconfigured from a four lane road to three lanes, with the addition of an on-road bicycle lane between Edinburgh Road and Applewood Crescent.
The intersection of Elizabeth Street and Victoria Road—where roadwork began on March 14, 2016—will be only partially open until the end of May for road reconstruction while the underground sewer and water pipes are being replaced. Westbound Elizabeth Street will have reduced access until the end of May due to the addition of curbs, gutters, a bicycle lane, and sidewalks on both sides of the road.
In addition to the construction projects across the city, the University of Guelph will be undertaking some significant infrastructure repairs to its drivable surfaces this summer.
According to a campus bulletin released on May 4, 2016, South Ring Road will have limited access from May until early August. The road will be closed on currently unannounced days for major sewer work.
Elsewhere on campus, Parking Lot P13 will be closed while new curbs, LED lights, and a stormwater management system are installed.
P13, P3 and P19 will all be receiving asphalt resurfacing, and will be closed at various points over the next few months.
