548 area code added to Guelph and surrounding region
Guelph added a new area code to the phonebook on Sat, June 4. The new 548 area code has been approved by the Canadian Numbering Administrator to coexist with the current 519 and 226 area codes, and will be introduced as new telephone numbers are issued.
The 548 area code will serve all of the same locations as 519 and 226 including Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, Brantford, London, Stratford, Woodstock, Orangeville, Owen Sound, Sarnia, and Windsor in addition to many smaller communities within the same service area.
519, the original area code for the region, was created in 1953. The last time that an area code was issued for the region of southwestern Ontario was the 226 area code in 2005, which got delayed until October of 2006.
