Student Resource Guide 2016-2017

Aboriginal Resource Centre (ARC)

The Aboriginal Resource Centre provides a welcoming environment for all Aboriginal students and strives to make connections within the University community. Programs and services include: Aboriginal student advising and support, programs to help with the transition to university life, study support and tutoring assistance, as well as bursary and scholarship information.

Centre for New Students

The Centre for New Students supports incoming undergraduate students in their transition to university and throughout their first year of study. Through START and Orientation Week events, the centre collaborates with a number of campus partners to deliver a range of academic and social events to kickstart your university experience.

C.J. Munford Centre

The C.J. Munford Centre provides a safe space for racialized students that functions as a resource library and forum for discussion, focusing on issues of race and diversity. The centre is open to anyone in the Guelph community interested in learning about issues regarding people of colour around the world.

Community Engagement & Global Citizenship

Community Engagement & Global Citizenship focuses on giving students the opportunity to be leaders of social change. This unit provides programs and resources that help connect students with local and global initiatives, combining real community engagement and academic studies.

Co-operative Education & Career Services

The Co-operative Education & Career Services (CECS) department is an on-campus resource for students and alumni, providing guidance to work toward your career or further education goals. CECS provides assistance in all stages of the job search process from building the perfect resume, performing a stellar interview, to accepting job offers.

Counselling Services

Counselling Services fosters academic success, personal development, and spiritual growth through the provision of responsive and proactive programs and services. With group therapy and counselling sessions, personalized support, and urgent walk-in services, professional counsellors are available to students to help with any mental health concerns or personal challenges.

Diversity and Human Rights (DHR)

The role of the Diversity and Human Rights office is to help maintain an environment within which all persons, regardless of their personal characteristics, feel that they are treated with dignity and respect. Their staff, along with University community members, works toward meeting the U of G’s standard of protecting human rights.

Guelph Student FoodBank

The Guelph Student FoodBank is a confidential service that provides graduate and undergraduate University of Guelph students access to emergency food, anti-poverty resources, and referrals to other food security, anti-poverty, and financial assistance groups

Guelph Resource Centre for Gender Empowerment and Diversity (GRCGED)

GRCGED provides a safe, interactive, and creative environment that advocates for anti-oppression and feminism. By offering a platform for workshops and events, crisis support, and a well-stocked resource library, GRCGED aims to educate and create awareness surrounding the issues of social and power relations.

Health & Performance Centre

The Health and Performance Centre (HPC) offers a wide range of diagnostic, rehabilitation, and health promotion services, including physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic and sports medicine. The services are offered on a fee for service basis—many of which are covered by the student health plan.

International Student Organization (ISO)

The ISO provides a space for international students to learn about university life on campus and of the various resources available to them. With a lounge located in room 535 of the University Centre and multiple events held throughout the year, this organization helps to build relationships within the diverse community of international students at Guelph.

Learning and Curriculum Support

Learning and Curriculum Support, located primarily on the first floor of McLaughlin Library, hosts a network of services to help students make the most of their courses and assignments. The support system is comprised of Writing Services, Information Technology, Learning Services, and Supported Learning Groups (SLG).

Multi-Faith Resource Team

Multi-Faith Resources on campus consists of a team of leaders or representatives from a number of different faiths, all working together to meet the religious and spiritual needs of the university community. Multi-Faith Resources are committed to promoting friendliness, religious understanding, harmony in diversity, and spiritual growth on campus.

Off Campus Living

Off Campus Living works closely with students, residents, landlords, and city staff to help facilitate communication and to ease the way for students who live in Guelph. They also provide a range of programs and services to support students in making the transition to off campus living, in navigating new relationships with landlords, housemates and neighbours.

Office of Intercultural Affairs

The Office of Intercultural Affairs (OIA) serves the campus community by fostering an environment of cultural competency and diversity. At the intersection of academic and co-curricular learning, the OIA offers intentionally designed programming and services that foster leadership and community development within an intercultural and international context.

OUTline

OUTline is the University of Guelph’s resource and support service specializing in questions relating to sexual orientation and gender identity. The OUTline website includes an online chat service that provides a safe space if you ever need to talk to someone, as well as CampOut, an anonymous support group for students who may be questioning their sexuality or are in the process of coming out.

SafeWalk

SafeWalk is a student-run organization dedicated to providing people on campus with a safe and reliable escort after dark. This service is free of charge and runs from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. during the fall and winter semesters. To access, use the SafeWalk extension 53200 from any on-campus phone, push the Safewalk button on any Bell pay phone or the emergency blue pole phones located around campus, or approach any SafeWalk volunteers.

Student Accessibility Services (SAS)

SAS offers specialized programs and services to students with physical and learning disabilities registered at the University of Guelph (full-time or part-time undergraduate and graduate). SAS works with students, faculty, and staff to maximize campus accessibility and work toward a barrier-free environment.  

Student Health Services

Student Health Services supports student’s academic success by providing comprehensive medical and health services to students and their immediate families. The health clinic staff includes a team of physicians and nurses and who are available by appointment or during the walk-in clinic hours.

Student Help and Advocacy Centre (SHAC)

The Student Help and Advocacy Centre is a student run advocacy and referral centre that provides a safe space for students to ask questions and get information. SHAC staff are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis for students seeking help with academic, financial, housing/tenancy, human rights, legal, university processes, and more.

Student Housing Services

Student Housing Services provides residence space and services for over 5000 students as well as two locations for students with families. By providing living spaces, Student Housing Services also provides students with the opportunities to connect with one another and responds to the needs of students living on campus.  

Student Support Network

The Student Support Network provides drop-in peer support located at Raithby House offering a non-judgmental listening and support service from an extensively trained group of volunteers. As a part of Counselling Services, the SSN also advocates for mental health and responds to students in crisis or at risk.

Undergraduate Academic Information Centre (UAIC)

The Undergraduate Academic Information Centre, located in the University Centre, is a resource hub that provides general academic advising to undergraduate students and acts as a referral centre to other campus resources. UAIC can also help with choosing the the right courses to fulfill your degree and applying for external scholarships.

The Wellness Education Centre

The Wellness Education Centre provides resources and interactive programming for students at the University of Guelph. Peer helpers and centre volunteers plan events, information display boards, and awareness campaigns designed to help students learn about topics like body image, drug and alcohol use, sexual health, nutrition, and spirituality.
