Re: Official proposal presented to UC Board
As one of the representatives who attended from CUPE 1334 (not 3913), I appreciated being extended speaking rights. Unfortunately, I had to leave for another meeting before I voicing my concerns about the proposed renovations to the University Centre. CUPE 1334 has offices on the third floor of the centre, and pressure to move is problematic for us, as well as for student groups and organizations, including GRCGED. Also, I fully agree that work needs to be done in the UC, but not merely “a facelift.” Changes to safety regulations over the years mean renovations to buildings containing asbestos (most of campus) need thought, special care, and action. Structural changes, and changes in usage, have caused problems with ventilation that need to be addressed. I sincerely hope that health and safety requirements will be taken seriously in any upcoming renovations, in addition to important social and community needs.
