Album of the Week

Alt-J’s 2014 album This Is All Yours is the British alternative-rock band’s sophomore album. It blends soft, non-traditional tunes with upbeat tracks reminiscent of—but totally incompatible with—their 2012 album An Awesome Wave. As far as artist evolution goes, Alt-J took experimentation to heart. The album presents itself as a travel narrative—most tracks were written while touring An Awesome Wave.

Subdued tracks “Pusher” and “Warm Foothills” contrast with the more recognizable “Every Other Freckle” and “Left Hand Free,” but the same high level of intensity is present throughout the album. Little-known fact: the song “Hunger of the Pine” samples a remixed version of Miley Cyrus’s “4×4” created for her by Alt-J’s drummer, Thom Green. The album’s versatility allows it to be present as the background for studying, or as the forefront for an active listen.
