How to have a strong spine
The Guelph School of Art (GSA) held their first workshop of the new year on Jan. 15.
Locals from all over the Guelph community attended the workshop and learned how to create and customize their own hardcover, hand-stitched books.
The bookbinding class was taught by Carolyn Eady, a bookbinder and printmaker who has been running the workshop at the GSA a few times a year for five years.
The bookbinding workshop appeals to the creative, ranging from a beginner to intermediate level.
“The whole maker movement is kind of a big deal right now. People are really into making hand-made things, and books are quite practical for artists, writers, even musicians,” commented GSA director Laura Paghal.
So why bother with handmade books when there are a myriad of cheaper, mass-produced options out there?
These hand-bound books are carefully crafted, unique to its creator. They make great gifts because of the added personal touch. They stand out amongst the standard journals, and make a statement that there is meaning and value in handcrafted items.
