The importance of community

These past few weeks have been difficult: we have lost students; Québec has experienced a tragedy triggered by hate; and our neighbour to the south is engaged in policies that impact on the rights of many.

I will admit to struggling—feeling myself being dragged down into despair. But I am blessed—surrounded by people who care. Faculty, staff, and students reached out to see if I was okay, asked what they could do to help, reminded me of the good work we do, and the blessings of this country.

I was humbled to watch the team similarly reach out across campus to provide support and programs as needed. Thanks to all of you. In times of duress, it is the community that heals—a community that focuses positively on looking for solutions together. We need to challenge ourselves and others for positive change, but also make sure we are supporting our fellow Gryphons.

Over the next few weeks, I encourage you to stop and ask people how they are, really ask and listen. If you or a friend are struggling, reach out and let someone know. It can be another friend, a family member, a trusted faculty or staff member, or connect with our resources on campus. Go to our mental wellbeing website for tools on healthy living and how to get support. We are a caring and strong community and this will see us through these challenges.
