Solid colours and camo make up the seasonal palette
Two issues ago, I wrote about winter fashion for women that was both stylish and warm, so I thought it would only be fitting to follow up by looking at what men are wearing in these colder times.
What I love about this season is the overlapping trends that have been carried over into clothing for both men and women, opening the door to cool, customizable looks.
Starting from the top, layers—including plaids, denim shirts, long cut t-shirts, and oversized sweater shirts—like those of their female counterparts, are making the rounds thanks to influencers such as Drake, Justin Bieber, and Marcus Butler.
What sets men’s winter fashion apart is the recurring colour palette. In the men’s ranges available this season, focus has been pulled to solid colours and lots of black and white, allowing printing and lettering to play centre stage. This can be seen in the resurgence of brands such as Adidas, Nike, and the super-popular brand Supreme.
Jackets tend to be getting longer, in the form of Burberry-esque trench coats, camouflage-patterned camels, and cargo jackets. Keeping it on the shorter side, bombers are also proving to be just as popular for men, with embroidery on the sleeves, chest, and back. For extra warmth, lightweight puff jackets from companies like The North Face and Patagonia are looking good—especially in black. Finally, short versions of the camo jackets as well as denim jackets are rounding out the outer layers for looks this season.
Pants have been straightforward this season—and straight cut as well. A tighter fitting black or light-wash denim has been the go-to for many this season, with moto or distressed features added. A slimmer fitting sweatpant or jogger has also been popular when going for a more casual look, being featured in stores such as Foot Locker, Top Man, and by many sportswear brands.
Finally, we have shoes and accessories. Similar to women’s fashion, Vans and Converse are popular, as well as Yeezys, Nikes, and Adidas, especially due to the newer designs like the Boosts, Roshes, and Lunars. The inclusion of a good “dad hat” with simple or no branding and in solid colours. Sunglasses are part of the looks as well, with a similar emphasis on aviator modified frames, such as Ray Bans, Nixon, and Oakley.
Overall, the looks this season have been leaning towards an “athleisure,” or more casual look; keeping you warm this winter season, while once again proving that functionality does not have to compromise style.
