Toronto’s first Light Festival is currently being held in the historic Distillery District from January 27 to March 12.

Organizers of the event explain that they wanted to hold the festival because, “Winter sucks and we simply want to make winter not suck so much.”

The distillery district is known for being North America’s largest neighbourhood of Victorian industrial buildings and attracts thousands of visitors every year with annual events such as the Toronto Christmas Market.

Many of the light sculptures invite audience participation, such as this one, which requires a rider to pedal a bicycle in order to project an image of the rider on a horse.

The light festival features over 17 light sculptures by many Canadian artists, as well as international artists from countries such as the Netherlands, India, Italy, Israel, Lebanon, Australia, Belgium, and the United States.
