In today’s thrift scene, the hard work is done for you
As the season of winter is hopefully coming to an end, the awkward weather is upon us. With the struggle to stay warm in the morning, but not melt in the afternoon warmth, the need for new pieces in the wardrobe is also here.
While constantly having to match the weather to your wardrobe can be tiring on both you and your wallet, the trend of thrift shopping has really made a surge in popularity.
With so many ways to shop for the items you need or want, thrift shopping has replaced “full priced” shopping for many people this year.Traditionally, you would have to head to a Salvation Army, Value Village, or your local thrift shop to dig through the masses of clothes in order to find one thing you liked. Though some still do this from time to time, there are more efficient and enjoyable ways to thrift shop than ever before.
If you would prefer to sit in the comfort of your own home, you can download apps like Carousel and Depop and scroll through the options posted by people around the world. Though this is a great option, you do have to remember that shipping isn’t always included and it may take some time to reach you—but it does make finding certain unique pieces a little easier.
If you would rather leave the house, shops like The Patch, Backbone Vintage, Meow, Outpost, and Take Time Vintage in downtown Guelph can also make the process a bit easier. By picking through the clothing before they display it in the store, boutique shops like these get the best items so that you don’t have to search for them yourself. Again, this does mean that items may retail a little higher than at the “OG” thrift stores, but it does make for a pleasant shopping experience.
What really makes the difference—and what seems to be the big reason that people are gravitating to thrifting this season—is the recycling aspect of the clothes. Not only does this mean that prices stay lower and shopping is more accessible, it also means that if unique finds don’t end up in your daily rotation of clothes, they won’t leave you feeling so much buyer’s remorse. You can also find some amazing pieces that you may not have realized you needed that become staples in your wardrobe.
Regardless of the option that you choose, thrifting this season will make it easier for you to accomplish your fashion, comfort, and budget goals without the big ticket prices and the restraints of hitting up the mall.
