Spreading ideas through conversation
There is no one better positioned to talk about food and agriculture to the next generation of Canadians than the next generation of Canadian farmers.
Students from the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) at the University of Guelph decided to utilize their knowledge and celebrate Canadian Agriculture Day on Feb. 16 by creating as many conversations as they could.
Students set up displays from various commodity groups and spent the day talking to other students and answering questions.
The event was a part of the U of G Food Talk initiative, an initiative that is lead by OAC students to promote food and farming to their peers on campus.
“We have the people and we have the resources, so this is us doing what we can to help promote Canadian agriculture,” said Kayla Veldman, a fourth-year crop science student and event co-organizer.
At the end of the day, OAC students handed out more than 600 “Happy Canadian Agriculture Day” cards (courtesy of Farm & Food Care), over a hundred cupcakes, and countless other resources that had been donated by various farm organizations.
“Overall we are really, really happy with how today went and have made a lot of notes on how to make it even better for next year,” said Veldman.
