Fourth-year fears: Part 2

Graduation can be exciting, but it can also leave students feeling stressed and unsure. Here’s what students in their final semester at U of G had to say about their biggest fears after graduation:

“I’m not sure if this counts as a fear, but I’m most afraid of being away from my Guelph family. Over the last four years, the people that I have met have become my best friends, my roommates, my support system, and practically my brothers and sisters. I never imagined that a group of people would have such an impact on my life, but we’ve become this quirky little family and I love them with all my heart. We’ve been through so much and they have always been there for me, through good times and bad. They never fail to put a smile on my face and my time at Guelph would not have been the same without them. I don’t know what I’m going to do without them next year.”

“Being in school has always brought me a sense of security. I never really had to think about the next phase of my life because I would always just say, ‘I have next year to think about it.’ Now that graduation is looming I will have to face these questions about my future and decide where my next journey will take me. This new situation of the unknown is scary to me and will definitely take time to adjust to.”

Brandon Shirk, Nutrition

“I’m happy that I have a goal for myself after undergrad. However, I’m scared that what I have planned won’t go as planned. How many attempts is it going to take to get into grad school? Will I have to live off my parents forever? Once I begin my career path, will I even like it? This endless cycle of questions will torment me for hours at night. But, I know I need to just take a breath and remind myself that life is a journey and not a destination.”

Regan Duff, Child Youth and Family

“Honestly, the only thing I’m worried about is paying off my student debt. My god, that’s gonna take a while.”

Austin Marchese, Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry
