Field hockey team hosts annual Cut for the Cure event

The team has raised over $25,000 in six years

The Gryphon field hockey team hosted their sixth annual Cut for the Cure to raise awareness and money for the Canadian Cancer Society and Hospice Wellington

The event saw 17 athletes and one head coach hailing from 10 different sports come together to cut their hair and support the cause at the Gryphon Fieldhouse on Friday, March 24.

“Everyone is affected by [cancer] in some form or another; whether it’s a loved one or a good friend, it touches everyone’s families, which is why we decided to do [the event],” said head coach of the field hockey team, Michelle Turley. “I think it’s a really great initiative that we have taken on […], I’m really impressed with how the team loves to give back to the community and important causes.”

The event began as solely for members of the field hockey team until a couple years ago when they opened it up to all varsity athletes. This year marked the largest event to date.

Logan Garrick from the women’s volleyball team was one of the first to cut off her hair and, although she was nervous, she embraced the moment. “I haven’t had my breakdown yet—I’m sure that will happen later tonight,” Garrick said laughing. “But I am happy that I did it.”

The field hockey team raised a total of $3,420 this year through online donations and a raffle at the event.
