The University of Guelph kicks off summer 150
Families and friends gathered together on Johnston Green for SummerFest on June 25.

Gryph, the University of Guelph’s beloved mascot, took photos with countless kids.

Danny Michel — one of four music acts at the festival — entertained the crowd with Batman riffs, personal anecdotes, and his own brand of folk/rock/world.

Kids stood patiently in what was easily the longest line at SummerFest so that they could play bubble soccer, provided by the Athletics tent.

Others enjoyed a dash of fantasy with their sports as they played Quidditch, joined by members of U of G’s Quidditch team. Quidditch is based on the magical sport played by wizards and witches in the Harry Potter books.

Cuteness was in no short supply at SummerFest as Wild Ontario brought a slightly camera-shy owl to the party.

The Department of Plant Agriculture invited festival-goers to pick their favourite flowers to make a mixed container. Rodger Tschanz, the trial garden manager at U of G, explained that the data they collect from the surveys will be used to determine what people may be able to purchase in 2018. Survey participants received an asparagus seedling from U of G’s breeding program.

Of course, no Guelph festival is complete without a quick bite from a food truck, and these thai fish tacos from Luchador Streatery definitely hit the spot.
