Beat the summer heat, Royal City style
If you’re staying in Guelph this summer then you may be dreading the heat just outside your air-conditioned haven. Most students don’t always have a ton of time or extra funds to have the kind of summers posted all over social media. Luckily, there is no shortage of fun and cheap ways to enjoy your summer. Check out my top five ways to stay cool in Guelph.
- The Splash Pad outside City Hall
Guelph is lucky enough to have a public splash pad downtown waiting for us to enjoy. Don’t worry about grabbing a swimsuit, just bring your shorts and a T-shirt. It’s hot enough that you will dry off quickly. As a bonus: You’ll be cool enough to do a shopping run while you’re there.
- Getting ice cream at The Boathouse Tea Room
The Boathouse has amazing ice cream with different flavours every week. You’ll save money on gas too if you’re going here with a bunch of friends since they have vegan and sugar-free options, so you won’t have to drive around getting everyone’s favourite cool treat. Even better: they serve an extra scoop of cool in the form of a cool breeze, courtesy of Speed River.
- Kayak and canoe rentals

Another great aspect of getting ice cream at the Boathouse is that you’re just a few steps away from kayak and canoe rentals. While other places offer similar rental prices, the Boathouse has a central location, saving you gas money (yet again).
- Guelph Lake
There are so many beaches around this area, but if you are hoping to stay close to home, Guelph Lake is a great option for you. Who doesn’t love to enjoy a sandy lake on a scorching hot day? Pack a towel and some snacks and enjoy your school-free days while you can.
- Public pools

The beach is not for everyone and that’s okay. You can still have your time in the sun and enjoy the water at a public pool! Victoria Road Recreation Centre, for example, offers an indoor swimming pool with free days all throughout summer.
