People share stories of their very worst dates

“Cheque please!”

“My boyfriend of a few years knew how important Valentine’s Day was to me. Even though he said he had nothing planned, I thought it was just his way of building up a surprise. I got called into work on the day and had to stay late so we decided to do something that evening. As my shift ticked on, my excitement and anticipation rose. Finally, he picked me up from work… with his other friend in the car. We ended up all going to Harvey’s. I paid for everyone.”

“My mom told me a story of the time she was interested in this guy when she was younger. His 1971 MGB jet black sports car had initially captured her attention and [she] was delighted when he asked her on a date. When it was time for dinner, however, he rolled up in his dad’s Mercedes. My mom lost interest very quickly as it wasn’t as ‘exciting.’ Who would ever think a Mercedes was impressive?”

“I once went on an all-you-can-eat sushi date with my ex-boyfriend. I kept ordering small amounts, whereas my ex-boyfriend ordered a bunch at once. Dish after dish kept appearing from the kitchen. We were sharing pieces of our orders, but soon he got full. Still, the dishes kept coming. I felt pressured to finish everything he had ordered since we would have to pay for what was left. I almost had to be rolled out of the restaurant and couldn’t digest any of the food. Turns out I couldn’t digest the relationship either!”

“A guy at my school asked me on a date to the cinema. He kept me waiting for about 25 minutes and didn’t apologize when he showed up. I don’t always expect my date to pay for me so I had brought my wallet — and just as well I did! He paid in cash, but didn’t have enough on him, so I ended up paying for half of it. When we finally got into the theatre, he proceeded to mansplain the entire movie to me. It was Finding Dory.”
