ARE YOU ENGAGED? CANDIDATES TALK CAMPUS CULTURE

RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

Tyler Poirier

What is your platform?

“The four main topics I am focusing on are increased transparency, democratic participation, environmental sustainability, and accessibility.

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I want to expand the ways in which information is distributed across campus. I think the CSA can do better to increase accessibility on campus. Whether this means providing information in alternative methods or making buildings more accessible.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“I think that knowledge mobilization is a contributing factor to lower engagement, and overall stress plays a role as well. Students have a lot of pressure on them, and we need to be cognizant of that.”

Why is engagement important?

Without engagement, providing those essential services can be difficult, whether that be due to funding cuts or a lack of volunteers.”

Nolan Polkinghorne

What is your platform?

“I am running on the platform of service. I want the student union to amplify the strong student voice that exists.”

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I find that being human is something that people can relate to. I want to dedicate portions of my time to not being in my office and be here talking to people.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“It’s no one’s fault. I don’t think it is the CSA’s fault. I think it is a byproduct of the world we live in. We live very fast paced lives and students have a lot going on. When things get tough you retreat inward, I’ve experienced this too.”

Why is engagement important?

Student engagement is important for a multitude of reasons. I think when you get engaged in your community you feel a part of it, you take ownership in it and in turn your environment improves.”

Zoey Ross

What is your platform?

“Create an environment on campus that encourages competitive student elections. Collaborate with the University to help with graduate readiness, and on-campus employment.”

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I would like to see the creation of a student leadership master-list. Let’s present all leadership roles on campus in the most up-front way possible, as early as possible to help spur growth.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“Students today are facing more pressure to perform in a declining job market, so the idea of doing extracurriculars is out of reach for many.”

Why is engagement important?

“The CSA is not a flashy student organization, but they do good work in the community and could do more with your help.”

RUNNING FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Maya Persram

Candidate, College of Biological Sciences

What is your platform?

“I would like to continue to create a diverse, welcoming space for all students by being an advocating voice for the rights of students, clubs, societies, and other student organizations on campus.”

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I  would like to set up booths in the UC Courtyard whenever the CSA is running an event so that we could speak to students directly.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“I think it comes down to ensuring students are aware of the opportunities and services that are available to them and letting them know that they should voice their opinions.”

Why is engagement important?

“Engagement is important because sometimes just knowing the information isn’t enough; sometimes you should be involved and have your voice heard because the decisions being made probably affect you, and learning about them after the fact won’t really help.”

Celine Boumitry

College of Social & Applied Human Sciences

What is your platform?

“I believe in transparency, and active communication with students.”

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I will work hard to strongly promote and increase the student body’s engagement with the CSA by furthering their ability to use their voices.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“I believe that student engagement is low because often times students are not given the opportunity to give their feedback on CSA initiatives.”

Why is engagement important?

Engagement with students is important because the CSA is here to represent the undergrad community, and the students will not be accurately represented without having the ability to participate in some decision-making processes, whether it be through voting, surveys, or otherwise”

Laura Wilson

College of Social & Applied Human Sciences

What is your platform?

“I believe that post-secondary institutions should represent innovation, change, and the future, and I hope to be able to work toward representing that on the board in order to “improve life” for everyone.”

What are your plans to increase student engagement with CSA on campus?

“I hope to publicize some of the many resources available to students that the CSA offers.”

Why do you think that student engagement with CSA is so low?

“I believe that accessibility can sometimes be an issue barring students from participating. School can be extremely stressful and time-consuming, especially if someone is also working to help pay for expenses.”

Why is engagement important?

“The CSA has resources that will benefit each and everyone, and students will benefit as they have a trusted resource to use to help them navigate being a student at the university and in the city.”
