Biden wins the U.S. election

Biden wins U.S. presidency with 290 electoral college votes; Trump defeated at 214

On Nov. 7, Joe Biden won the 2020 U.S. presidential election against President Donald Trump.

“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but unify. Who doesn’t see red states or blue states, but see’s the United States,” Biden said during his victory speech.

It all came down to key battleground states. With a win in his home-state of Pennsylvania, Biden secured the 270 electoral college votes he needed to win the election. Shortly after, Biden won over Nevada as well.

According to the Associated Press, Biden has a total of 290 seats, whereas Trump has 214.

After one of the most divisive elections in American history, the country emerged with a democratic president and the first female vice-president, Kamala Harris.

“While I may be the first woman in the office, I will not be the last,” Harris said during her first vice-presidential address. “To the children of our country regardless of gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourself in a way that others may not.”

Harris went to school in Montreal during the late 70’s and early 80’s. According to CTV, her former classmates say that how she is now is “exactly how she was 40 years ago always laughing and smiling.”

The U.S. remains divided over Biden’s win, and Trump has refused to concede and claims the election results are the result of ballot fraud.

While New York City celebrated Biden’s win, protestors showed up at the State Capitol building in Atlanta supporting Trump.

The Canadian government had been notably silent during the election, however, Prime Minister Trudeau took to Twitter to congratulate the newly-elected president and vice-president.

“Congratulations, @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris,” Trudeau wrote. “Our two countries are close friends, partners, and allies. We share a relationship that’s unique on the world stage. I’m really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both.”

Other Canadian political leaders to congratulate Biden included Erin O’Toole, Jagmeet Singh, Julie Payette and Kristen Hillman.
