The Ontarion is Open for Submissions!
Not sure what to submit? Here is some of what we’re looking for:
News:
(250–1,000 words) The best way to pitch a news story is by coming to one of our editorial meetings. Editorial meetings are held in our offices every week. Join our volunteer mailing list for details about upcoming meetings. In these meetings, we discuss story ideas and figure out how to best help reporters thoroughly report their story. We report on all aspects of news as it relates to our school and our community. You can also submit finished news stories or outlines through the button above, and the editorial team will happily consider them for publication online or in future issues. Please attach a .pdf, .doc, or .docx through the button above.
If your story is particularly timely, please email the editor-in-chief directly.
Long-Form Writing:
(2,000–10,000 words) The Ontarion is looking for in-depth reporting or extended personal essays on all topics. While we will gladly consider finished work, we would prefer to receive pitches. This allows us to work with writers to help them build a compelling story. Please submit an outline of your story (500 words max) and a brief writing sample or excerpt (.pdf, .doc, or .docx) through the button above.
Op-Eds:
(500–2,000 words) The Ontarion is looking for thoughtful, considered, authoritative, convincing, and clearly written opinions that offer meaningful insights on a particular topic. All topics are welcome. If you would like to submit an opinion piece for review, please attach a .pdf, .doc, or .docx through the button above.
Letters To The Editor:
These should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief directly
Profiles:
The Ontarion is committed to celebrating and highlighting work being done by students, instructors, and researchers at the University of Guelph, as well as members of the wider community. If you or someone you know is doing interesting, innovative, or challenging, work on or around campus, we want to hear about it. Please submit profile outlines (500 words max; must include who the person is, what they’re doing, and why it matters) as a .pdf, .doc, or .docx through the button above.
Poetry:
The Ontarion is currently accepting poetry. We are partial to shorter works but will gladly accept submission of up to five (5) pages. Please attach a .pdf, .doc, or .docx through the link above.
Humour:
The Ontarion likes a good laugh. If you’ve got something funny we’d love to read it. Please attach a .pdf, .doc, or .docx through the button above.
Photography:
The Ontarion is interested in photojournalism and other forms of narrative photography. We are open to hearing pitches and to considering finished works. The Ontarion has access to some equipment and may be able to provide additional resources to photographers, should they need it. Please submit a brief pitch, a portfolio, or a link to a portfolio through the link below. Photographers and videographers who are interested in working with The Ontarion can also email Nicolas Buck, the Multimedia Content Creator at nbuck@theontarion.com.
Comics:
The Ontarion is seeking comics of all varieties, subjects, and styles: literary, action, humour, political, absurdist—you name it! Want to do a political sketch? Maybe you’re interested in doing a recurring strip? All pitches are welcome! We are considering both finished and in-production works. To make the editorial process easier, feel free to send early drafts and roughs. Please attach a .pdf or .jpg of your comic, or a .pdf, .doc, or .docx explaining your idea (include links to your portfolio) through the link below.
Talk Nerdy To Me:
If you have a question that you’d like answered in our sexuality column, you can submit it here.
The Ontarion is a place to try new ideas and we’re always looking to experiment. If you’ve got an idea for a contribution, a project, or anything really, get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
Email the Editor-in-Chief and let’s chat.
